Social Emotional Learning -Calming Time
The Joyce Community Education Foundation appreciated the incredibly generous grant resources from the Myrtle and John Gossett Charitable Foundation to help the special needs students at Crescent School.
As Crescent’s special education staff analyzed the tools and programs best suited for the students, they realized they needed a calming environment as well as sensory tools. Social emotional learning takes place when students are allowed to relax and refocus. As some students struggle more than others, having a separate place for them to go and utilize the calming tools has been incredibly beneficial.
While some of the sensory tools are geared towards younger learners, there are some older Break Boxes for teens that can be on hand, thanks to Gossett funding. These boxes include the things that appeal to older students, that have calming effects, like fidget spinners and tactile items designed to give their mind a chance to slow down.
Empowering students to succeed through an awareness of their sensory needs will give them hope and skills as they grow.
Crescent School now has a place where students can go to relax and help them develop the self-regulation tools they need so they can return to the classroom and be able to manage their emotions.
